Advent of Opportunities: Festive Celebrations at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital for Creating Careers

What do you get when you mix mentoring magic, future healthcare heroes, and a sprinkle of festive cheer? The answer: an unforgettable celebration at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital!

On Thursday 11th December, we rolled out the tinsel and turned up the tunes to mark the completion of the Creating Careers: A Step Ahead Mentoring Programme 2025. This wasn’t just any event-it was a chance to celebrate the incredible journey of four brilliant students from Calderstones School, Liverpool, who’ve spent the past two months learning, growing, and stepping confidently towards their dream careers in health and care.

What is the programme all about?

In October 2025, we launched an exciting initiative with a hospital tour, meet-your-mentor sessions, and plenty of enthusiasm. Over the following weeks, students worked one-to-one with HR professionals from Liverpool Women’s University Hospital, diving into the skills, values, behaviours, and attitudes that make healthcare careers so rewarding.

From understanding patient rights to exploring the sheer variety of roles in the sector, these students didn’t just tick boxes-they built confidence, compassion, and clarity about their future paths.

Marking milestones together: students and families enjoy competitions and celebration

Fast forward to December, and the celebrations were in full swing! Our celebration event featured festive music, exciting competitions, and plenty of chocolate. Parents and carers didn’t just watch-they fully participated, making it a true family celebration of achievement.

We reflected on student and mentor achievements, shared inspiring stories, and looked ahead to the new year.

What is next for our students?

The journey continues as each student can access:

  • Work experience at Liverpool Women’s University Hospital
  • A place on Creating Careers: A Step Ahead Live – one week’s worth of work experience exploring health and social care careers, June 2026
  • Further Creating Careers modules to enhance learning and careers development

Words of reflection from our students

“The programme gives you an insight into healthcare and helps you understand the fundamentals of the roles. I’ve learnt about patient rights and gained a wider insight into values.”

“It helped me understand just how many careers there are and what they involve. I got advice, clarification, and developed confidence, understanding, and compassion.”

Today’s achievements and tomorrow’s opportunities

Healthcare isn’t just a job-it’s a calling. Through this programme, we’ve seen students grow into future professionals who are ready to make a difference. And that’s something worth celebrating!

“Being part of the Creating Careers mentoring programme has been a truly rewarding experience for the team at Liverpool Women’s Hospital. Supporting students as they explore healthcare careers not only helps shape the future workforce but also reflects our commitment to developing talent and engaging with our local community. We’ve seen first-hand how the programme builds confidence, and we hope this marks the beginning of an exciting journey into a career in healthcare.”Sarah Thomson, Head of HR, Liverpool Women’s University Hospital
